Greece is a land of mystery, a land of superb natural beauty and a land where some of the great minds of antiquity once walked. A land of an immense past, unknown to many especially to the ones who reside in it and call themselves “Hellenes” (Greeks).
How was Greece in the past? What were the differences between the various city states in the ancient times? Are the Modern Greeks linked to the ancient ones? What is their idiosyncrasy? How Greek was the Byzantine Empire? What happened during the Ottoman occupation? How did Greeceʼs population changed over the years? How and why the Modern Greek State was born? What was Greeceʼs role in WWI, WWII and other major events in modern history? What was the Asia Minor Disaster? How did Greece become a member of the European Union? What caused the Greek financial crisis?
All these and many more questions are addressed in this essay where facts are presented as facts without any attempt for “beautification”. The reader should be left to challenge these presented facts through his own thorough research. We have been told that usually winners write history but in this case, winners will be only those who treat history without any socio-political, racial, religious and ethnic bias in mind.
